Science Competitions

One good way for young people to get involved in science is through competition. Students who can commit to working in science, just as other students commit to sports, get a feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment from their success. Here are some information and links that may prove helpful in joining such an organization.
U.S. Department of Energy: National Science Bowl
This annual science competition is the largest academic competition of its kind and the only one sponsored by a department of the U.S. federal government. High school students with an interest in science are encouraged to get involved!
National Science Olympiad
This annual event at Indiana University consists of a series of science-related competitions, with medals awarded for those who do well. It's an exceptional way to become comfortable with using science.
Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge
The Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge is the only national science competition for students in grades 5 through 8. Forty finalists are rewarded with a free trip to Washington, D.C., prizes, and scholarships ranging up to $20,000.
